Design Challenge:
To begin the bathroom walls were covered in mirror, the floors were covered in carpet and the tub was purple! Oy! It all had to go and go fast! The homeowners wanted individual consoles, a custom designed shower, custom cabinetry that would allow for more storage and a classic tile design on the walls and floor.
Design Solution:
The intricacies of bathroom fixtures (style, size, function, price) were addressed first as they largely drive the design. Once they were selected, space planning was next. In order to achieve maximum floor space so that the homeowners could use the bath simultaneously, the depth of the shower/tub combination was decreased, the sink wall was bumped out a foot into unused garage space and the toilet was moved from the middle of the wall to the far end of the same wall. Now there is enough room for two sinks with storage underneath, a middle storage tower for personal items, as well as a full-depth linen closet inside the bathroom. The color palette for the space was driven by a 1” mosaic tile used in a diamond pattern in the shower and in the backsplash of both sinks. The diamond pattern was repeated on the floor to open up the space and add movement. Overall, the final design is subtle, slightly traditional and definitely sophisticated.
