Design Challenge:
This space was a mess! Built in 1937, no owner had ever touched this attic. Minimal electricity made the room unusable and the absence of heat and insulation caused the homeowners to choke at the sight of their first heating bill. With costs rising, the homeowners reacted quickly and began dreaming of a spa-like retreat perfect for reading and relaxing.
Design Solution:
Since the lack of heat was a major problem and strongly influenced the overall design of the attic, Molaia Design began researching the appropriate resolution. The rest of the home ran on an ancient boiler that was quickly determined insufficient. Therefore, a new boiler was installed and radiant baseboard heating was placed along one wall of the attic. Efficient, draft-free Icynene spray foam insulation was also used to ensure maximum heat retention. Both windows were replaced with casement frames and three skylights were added to create cross ventilation during the warm summer months. Halogen track lighting provided task and ambient lighting. Functional Roman shades, a plush cream carpet, shades of icy aqua paint and linen, cotton and chenille fabrics created a wondrous retreat. Stay turned to this space… it will soon become a nursery for this growing family!
